SOUTHERN STEEL BERHAD GROUP OF COMPANIES ("SSG")
SSG is an established producer of a wide range of high quality steel products including billets, steel bars, wire rods, wire mesh, PC strand and wires, and steel pipes. It is also currently the biggest producer of wire mesh in South East Asia. SSG's drawn wire, tyre bead, rope and galvanised wires are housed under a joint venture company with NV Bekaert SA, a global technological and market leader in advanced solutions based on metal transformation and coating.
Over the years, SSG has been driving for technological advancement, pioneering the commercialisation of some new equipment and processes with suppliers. The hot roll coil is the latest such endeavour. SSG also places great emphasis on consistency in supply of quality products to its business partners. The commitment to quality throughout the SSG's operations is recognised and some of its notable achievements include being the first steel mill group in Malaysia to be awarded the ISO 9002 certificate. Its subsidiary, Southern Steel Mesh Sdn Bhd ("SSM") is the only Malaysian wire mesh manufacturer to be awarded the prestigious ISO 9001:2001 and accredited with ACSR (Australian Certification Authority for Reinforcing Steels Ltd) certification for the Australian / New Zealand markets. Further, Southern Steel PC Sdn Bhd is MS ISO9001:2000 certified and complies with SIRIM standards of Malaysia as well as conforming to international quality standards such as American Petroleum Institute (API), Lioyds, American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and British Standards (BS). Another subsidiary, Southern Steel Pipe Sdn Bhd is the first steel mill in the country to be awarded the ISO 9001:2000 certification.
Southern Steel Berhad ("SSB")
SSB is one of the first steel mills in the world to use the Direct Current Arc Furnace and the first of its kind in Southeast Asia to install a High Productivity Twin Shell Direct Current Arc Furnace in its second steel making plant. SSB operates from its steel making complex in Prai, Penang, Malaysia with two steel making plants and four rolling mills.
Southern Steel Mesh Sdn Bhd ("SSM")
SSM became a wholly owned subsidiary of SSG in the year 2000. Since the late eighties, SSM has been the leader in the local steel welded mesh industry. SSM has four manufacturing plants in Malaysia, located at Klang, Prai, Tanjung Langsat and Kuantan. SSM's reinforcing steel business involves the production of cut and bend bars and steel wire mesh.
Southern Pipe Industry (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd ("SPIM")
SPIM became an associate of SSG in 1987 through the merger with SSG's pipe operation. In 1989, it became a subsidiary of SSG. It has since then grown to become a leading pipe manufacturer in the country producing a wide range of welder pipe including black pipe, conduit pipe, hot dipped galvanised pipe and in-line hot dipped galvanised pipe. SPIM is one of the few pipe makers in the world that employs the latest state of the art in-line galvanising process. In-line galvanising process is a revolutionary technology development that incorporates a hot dip galvanising process into the tube making line. SPIM's factories are located in Butterworth and Nibong Tebal, Penang, Malaysia.
Southern PC Steel Sdn Bhd (“SPC”)
SPC was established in the year 1980 as a pioneer in this region for the manufacture of high quality PC strands, PC wires and PC bars. SPC’s products are widely used in the prestressed concrete industry to manufacture products such as prestressed beams and piles, hollow core slabs, railways sleepers and concrete spun piles. It is also applied in the post tension industry to construct elevated highways, high rise buildings as well as bridges. Besides catering to domestic market in Malaysia, SPC’s products are well accepted internationally, especially in the United States, Europe, Middle East, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and Australia. SPC operates from its plant in Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia.
Southern Wire Industries (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd ("SWI") (now Bekaert Southern Wire Pte Ltd)
On 30 August 2012, SSB merged most of its wire operations, including SWI, into a joint venture company in Singapore, Bekaert Southern Wire Pte Ltd ("Bekaert Singapore") with NV Bekaert SA ("NV BK") for the manufacture and sale of specified steel wires in the ASEAN region. The JV Co will provide SSG the opportunity to expand its steel manufacturing and sale business and to jointly promote the SSG and NV BK brands in the ASEAN region.
